Please Help Japan

Instead of reading about a delicious food recipe this week, please take the time instead to donate to “For Japan With Love.”

For Japan With Love

Quoting their website:

“ShelterBox provide emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters at the time when they need it the most. Each large green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items. A whole box costs $1,000 (US), so we’re hoping to raise enough to send 5 boxes.”

At the time that I wrote this, they have already raised nearly $50,000, but that is still only enough for 50 families. Please donate to this group, Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders or any number of other charitable organizations.

Thank you.

Happy 2011!

良いお年を!! (yo-i o-to-shi o)

That’s Japanese for happy new year- I am international! Also it is fitting since they were one of the first countries to welcome in 2011.

Anyway, happy new blog year, we promise promise promise to blog this year. We already have a month or so’s worth of blogs ready to publish automatically once a week so that you, our loyal followers, are not disappointed in us anymore. I am sorry we disappeared, but sometimes that happens, right?

In our defense, the past two months have been super super busy. Not only with the holidays, but also because Cory and I undertook to write 50k-word novels in the month of November, which was pretty brutal to say the least. It was also very rewarding! We will be making a copy of the novels that we can show to our family and friends, so stay tuned for when we bring them to you and ask what you think!

All that aside, the year in food for us has seen a lot of changes. We started following (loosely) the weight watchers points system in an attempt to lose some weight and start us on a healthier-portion-controlled diet. So, probably no more really fatty recipes will show up here, unless they were a part of the backlog that we have (we took pictures of lots of foods this past year even though we didn’t blog about them yet. You will definitely see some not so healthy recipes in there.) Just a warning to anyone who was hoping for like…. deep fried everything, with a side of fries… we are not really feeling that anymore. So, hooray and cheers to a healthier 2011. I have lost about 20 pounds since mid-September, so I am not really going to turn back on all that hard work! (Except for the pounds that will likely have accumulated during the holidays in the past two weeks T_T)

All in all, we had a great 2010, and hope that you guys did too. We will work really hard to make this blog better in the coming year, so we hope that you will enjoy what we share and comment on it too! Happy New Year, and thanks for sticking around!

Beer Brewing! Part 1

SO, Cory has decided to jump on the homebrew train and try his hand at making beer. We bought all the necessary ingredients for a nice Amber Bock that we got to try a homebrew of in the store before we bought the stuff, so hopefully we can live up to that example. The first step is (of course) to thoroughly sanitize everything, because yeast and the stuff that goes into beer would totally eat up any bacterias from the air or equipment, making a weird, off-tasting beer. AKA not what we want. Also, I am going to definitely copy this information from our handy brew procedure sheet, just because I don’t remember a lot of technical names for things.

So here we go!

Facebook Us!

We are now on Facebook. So, if you feel like reverse-finding recipes (through pictures instead of through posts) you can do that there! We’ll post a quick update on there every time a new blog is available, in case you aren’t subscribed to our RSS or in case you don’t want to check back every few days wondering when we will update. Also you can become a fan of us and that way more people will be able to see the blog through you. Please promote us by becoming fans!

Enter 2010!

It’s a little late, but Happy New Year Everyone! This post is just to give you a taste of what we’re planning for the blog this year. Consider it your appetizer, so that you will whet your appetite for what’s to come ;)

This year, we’re continuing our two posts per week that we started a few months ago. We hope to have a few series’ of posts that will relate to each other, besides our continuing pursuit of foreign cuisines (which will now include cultural notes about what flavors and foods are popular, an d potentially why they are — in relation to borders, history, etc). The first of these series is the “Cooking Basics” series. This will explore things that we have so far taken for granted = techniques. This is to not only improve our own basic skills (which up to this point have been mostly self taught or improvised), but we also aim to brush up upon or teach you, our readers, with definitive cooking skills. Whether our readers know about or are unfamiliar with different knife cuts, aspects of a basic marinade, making a roux, or other things, we hope to really incorporate a back-to-basics approach into our blog. This way, when we handle more advanced recipes, both you and us will not be daunted by the techniques required to properly pull the meal off.

Another series we hope to explore is a review one. In this one, we will continue with our started with introducing new oils to you, by learning about the histories and flavor profiles of new (or common) oils and spices. WE hope to, by doing this, expand our (and your) culinary points of view.

Another new thing we will try out is doing experiments with special-fare-diets, such as veganism or vegetarianism. In the case of veganism, for example, we would document our attempts to live for a week on such a diet — how we feel, what tastes good, what we think about it overall, etc. We think that in this way, we can show our readers an inside look at these dietary restrictions so that if they ever choose to live that lifestyle, they could have a reliable source of information (or at least as reliable as a week’s worth of eating that way could be).

Of course, we will also continue sharing new recipes that we create or try out with you. We hope you continue reading with us this year, as we really do this for you as much as we do it for ourselves, if not more :D

Happy Tasting!
